Mandela banknotes set to hit the streets

first_img31 October 2012 South Africa’s new banknotes, featuring an image of former president Nelson Mandela on the front and images of the country’s “Big Five” wild animals on the reverse, will go into circulation on Tuesday, 6 November. Making the announcement in Pretoria on Tuesday, Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus said South Africa’s currency was “a unique symbol of our nationhood, with many of us handling banknotes every day. The Reserve Bank is proud to be able to honour South Africa’s struggle icon and first democratically elected president in this way.” The new notes will also have upgraded, state-of-the-art security features, as well as enhanced features for the visually impaired, including raised print on both sides. They will have the same R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200 denominations. Marcus said last month that the Bank had no plans to introduce higher denominations, noting that people in the country’s rural areas often struggled to break up a R200 note. The old notes will continue to be legal tender for as long as they remain in circulation, as the Reserve Bank gradually swaps them out. The Bank has been running an extensive awareness campaign ahead of the launch, giving South Africans, commercial banks and the retail industry plenty of opportunity to familiarise themselves with the features of the new notes. Adverts across all types of media, public outreach events and roadshows have extended countrywide and across the borders to common monetary areas such as Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Nananananananana BATMAN! — Batman’s Batcave (GC8413) — Geocache of the Week

first_img[vsw id=”sBe3QzVW5_8″ source=”youtube” width=”640″ height=”480″ autoplay=”no”](Not actual footage of the geocache.)Geocache Name:Batman’s Batcave (GC8413)Difficulty/Terrain Rating:2.5/3Why this is the Geocache of the Week:There are many reasons to hide a geocache: to bring geocachers to a beautiful location, show off an amazing geocache container, challenge geocachers to an extraordinary puzzle—or in this case, encourage geocachers to visit the lair of one of our favorite crime-fighting super heroes, Batman. Even if you didn’t grow up while the original Batman series was on air, you probably know of the amazing story lines, impeccable acting, and of course, the incredible dialog (Holy FTF Batman!). For fans of comics or the recent Batman movies, a visit to one of the most iconic caves in Hollywood history is a must. What the Geocache owner, mshock, has to say:“Batman’s Batcave was one of the first geocaches I ever found back in 2005 (I think it was my 10th or 12th).  I was a fan of the original TV series, for sure, and the cache represented my two favorite things about caching; #1 An interesting location (Hollywood history to boot!) #2 Hiking in Griffith Park.”“I am a huge Hollywood history buff and happy to maintain the location so that tourists from all over the world can experience the thrill of seeing actual movie locations and such famous landmarks. I’m beyond flattered and thrilled at the number of favorite points and it definitely creates a sense of responsibility in me to keep it well maintained and active.”And her message to fellow geocachers: “Be considerate of others.  When you are placing a cache,  make sure it is interesting/fun/safe, and make sure it is maintained.  When you are finding a cache, respect property and neighbors.  When you are logging a cache, be helpful and constructive with your criticism.  One harsh word can really put off a cache owner who was only trying to do something nice for you.”# of Finds:550# of Favorite Points:69What geocachers are saying:“We love visiting the Bat Cave, so we were very excited to learn there is a cache here…He found the cache after a bit of looking and said it was really cool, and remarked that it was one of the cleanest caches he’s seen in a while…Many thanks for this super fun one!” – Rosa Mundi“My dad bought the old Batman series when I was young. Finding this place is awesome for me!” – tim_neal“Always interesting to see places where movies and television shows were filmed. When my friend talked about doing this cache while he was out here, I placed it on my list of caches to do if I ever got out here. Well, this was the trip for me and I made a bee line here for this neat-o place.” – Hawaiian NinjaRead More LogsPhotos/Video:Batman isn’t home. I hope Gotham is safe. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netMaddie Madayag was a defensive fortress for Ateneo when it went the distance against University of Santo Tomas. The Lady Eagle was an impenetrable wall tallying 11 blocks, the most in the Final Four era, en route to 23 points leading Ateneo to the 19-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-11 win over the Golden Tigresses.Madayag broke the record previously set by La Salle’s Celine Hernandez a decade ago when she put up nine denials against Adamson University in 2008.ADVERTISEMENT Wintry storm delivers US travel woes before Thanksgiving Trump tells impeachment jokes at annual turkey pardon event Every week, INQUIRER Sports will be ranking the seven best performers in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament. Kat Tolentino (Ateneo de Manila University, outside spikerWeeks on list: 4Last week: N/AKat Tolentino. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netKat Tolentino was relatively quiet for Ateneo the past week with Ponggay Gaston taking a more prominent role as the Lady Eagle’s outside hitter. The start of the second round, though, was a different field for Tolentino.Although she played as a secondary for Madayag, Tolentino still finished with 20 points in their game against the Golden Tigresses and that production pushed her to the third spot of the Best Scorers table with 127 total points.5. Mary Ann Mendrez (University of the East, outside spiker)Weeks on list: 1Last week: N/AMean Mendrez. Eya Laure (University of Santo Tomas, outside spiker)Weeks on list: 4Last week: No. 4Eya Laure. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netEya Laure may be a second fiddle to Rondina in the UST system but that status doesn’t make her any less of a player.Laure has consistently delivered for the Golden Tigresses in her hot pursuit of the Rookie of the Year plum and although it came off a loss her 21-point performance against the Lady Eagles was the third-best offensive output this week behind Rondina’s 35 and Madayag’s 23. LATEST STORIEScenter_img 2. Cherry Rondina (University of Santo Tomas, outside spiker)Weeks on list: 4Last week: No.2Cherry Rondina. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netCherry Rondina has been nothing short of amazing for the Golden Tigresses this week but their loss to the Lady Eagles relegated her to the No. 2 spot instead. It’s long established that Rondina is one of the most potent offensive players of her generation especially when she bagged the Best Scorer award in Season 80 and she showed her abilities once more in UST’s lone game this week.Rondina put up 35 points in UST’s five-set loss to Ateneo and her offensive exploits tied Alyssa Valdez’ mark for the most in the UAAP in the Final Four era.And those 35 points further solidified Rondina’s hold of the top spot in the Best Scorers table when she totaled 157 points six weeks into the tournament.3. Lycha Ebon (Far Eastern University, opposite hitter)Weeks on list: 2Last week: N/ALycha Ebon. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netAn unfortunate injury was the only thing that stopped Lycha Ebon when the Lady Tamaraws faced the Lady Falcons.Ebon was making her case for the Rookie of the Year plum when she punished Adamson with 19 points but a bad landing forced her to leave the game early after her right knee buckled after she scored her final point. The Lady Tamaraws then finished the job for Ebon taking the five-set win, 30-32, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13.Here’s to hoping Ebon goes through a quick recovery.
