first_imgGLAAD, the world’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy organization, has announced the nominees for its 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, presented by Delta Air Lines, Hilton, Ketel One Vodka, and Wells Fargo.The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD’s work to accelerate acceptance of the LGBT community.Among the nominees: Academy Award nominees Carol and The Danish Girl; Golden Globe nominee Grandma; Film Independent Spirit Award nominees Appropriate Behavior and Tangerine; FOX’s hit drama Empire and Netflix’s Sense8, Master of None, Orange Is the New Black, and Grace and Frankie; Amazon’s Transparent; HBO’s Bessie; ABC’s 20/20 for its groundbreaking Diane Sawyer interview with Caitlyn Jenner; E!‘s I Am Cait, TLC’s I Am Jazz, both reality programs headlined by transgender people; CBS’ The Bold and The Beautiful; The New York Times for its “Transgender Today” series; ESPN’s SportsCenter; Essence Magazine; and Troye Sivan for his debut album Blue Neighbourhood.Spanish-language nominees include Ricky Martin for his new album A quien quiera escuchar. Also nominated was Telemundo morning show Un Nuevo Día, which received nominations for its interviews with Patricia Velásquez, the supermodel and actress who came out this year, and with transgender advocate Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen and his supportive mom, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Univision’s Al Punto was nominated for its story about transgender people in the military; and Univision.com for its article profiling couples instrumental to achieving marriage equality nationwide. CNN en Español earned six nominations for its coverage of LGBT issues. Teams made the correct decision in four of those 16 cases, for a 25 percent rate. (For comparison: Since 2015, regular season and playoffs combined, teams have gone for 2 points 27 percent of the time in “clear go” scenarios.)Of course, a decision being clear-cut doesn’t mean that it matters a whole lot, but note that even among the decisions with the most significant consequences, teams are still making the wrong choices regularly (most likely because of adherence to Dick Vermeil’s rigid and outdated system that leads them to repeat the same mistakes over and over). In particular, the aforementioned scenarios of being down 4, 8, or 11 points late are both quite clear and quite important.Another significant case is when a team scores to pull within 2: Go for 2! In addition to hopefully demystifying how to judge a lot of borderline situations, we identified some fairly clear-cut cases in which NFL coaches should choose to go for 2 but don’t. Ever.My hope, of course, was that teams would read this (or figure it out on their own) and that we’d see an immediate and cataclysmic shift in 2-point strategy — like going for it when down 4, 8, or 11 after scoring a touchdown late (which are not only real cases, but ones that are usually clear-cut and significant). If you’re in a rush, you could stop there and be in pretty decent shape.Through the first two weeks of this NFL season, teams have gone for 2 (from the 2-yard line) eight times overall. More importantly, of the 30 times that the numbers say they should have gone for 2, they did so just four times, for a rate of 13 percent. Since 2015, in the regular season and playoffs, teams that should have gone for 2 have done so around 15 percent of the time.Now, of course it’s possible that some teams are better or worse at going for 2 than average, but it isn’t possible that 85 percent of teams are worse than average. I’ve also calculated how often teams should “clearly” go for 2 — meaning situations in which they should go for it even if they are relatively quite bad at 2-point attempts3I set this threshold at a 40 percent expected conversion rate (the same as the bottom of the range lines in the chart above). Or 7.5 percentage points lower than the baseline conversion rate assumption of 47.5 percent. This is a rough best estimate (after discussion with Burke, among others) for how bad teams who are very bad at 2-point conversions actually are). — and there have been 16 such cases through Week 2:4For this season’s scenarios, I’ve analyzed each attempt individually (down to the second), while the chart above is calculated minute by minute, so there may be slight variations between the two. Literacy rate in state higher than natl average

first_imgKolkata: The state government will soon fill up the vacancies in the Mass Education Extension and Library Services department, Siddiqullah Chowdhury, Minister of State of the department said on Saturday.Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: “Today is International Literacy Day. The issue of literacy is a key component of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Our Govt is committed to spreading the light of education among all.” He was addressing a gathering to celebrate the International Literacy Day at Rabindra Sadan on Saturday afternoon. He said as per the 2011 Census, the literacy rate in Bengal is 76 percent but has gone up by at least another 9-10 percent. According to 2011 Census, literacy rate in Bihar is 55 percent, Odisha is 69 percent, Assam is 62 percent and Jharkhand 60 percent. He said steps have already been taken to expedite the literacy drive in all the districts. In Bengal, West Midnapore has the highest literacy rate that is 92 percent while in Uttar Dinajpur and Purulia, the rates are 69 percent and 64 percent respectively. Govt eyes expansion of eNAM scheme to markets of Bengal

first_imgKolkata: After the recent introduction of the Krishak Bandhu scheme which will grant Rs 2 lakh to the kin of farmers after their death irrespective of the cause, the farmers of Bengal are set to receive another good news. The state government has decided to expand the National Agriculture Market (eNAM) scheme to the markets of Bengal, in order to end the plight of small-scale, marginal farmers.Speaking at an event organised by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) on ‘Driving Agri-Business through electronic National Agriculture Market (eNAM) Platform & Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs)’ on Monday, the agriculture advisor to the Chief Minister, Pradip Mazumdar said: “In a country where agricultural distress is at an all-time high, it is highly important to find a modern solution to address the problem of wastage of surplus produce. eNAM gives the platform to small-scale farmers to meet international buyers and also to sell their produce at the best possible price.” Also Read – Bose & Gandhi: More similar than apart, says Sugata Bose”We are all used to the concept of e-shopping, where we can buy products online while sitting comfortably in our living room. Commodities like fruits, vegetables, sugarcane and jute are mainly dealt with on eNAM. The state government aims to double the numbers at the end of this year. Speaking about the hurdles faced by the scheme, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, secretary of West Bengal Agricultural Marketing, said that the eNAM scheme is giving efficient outcome in other states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana but not in Bengal. “The scheme is not going good for small and marginal farmers with very small amounts of produce. For them, there is a need for an aggregation system that collects small lots. Even grading and assaying of vegetables and foods has not been done well in the state. We need a transparent and robust online interface for buyers and sellers to benefit,” he said. The state government has already spent around Rs 40 lakh on the scheme and another 40 lakh is needed to keep the scheme up and running. “Within a couple of weeks or months, eNAM will be getting the additional budgetary support from the government. This is a good scheme but it has teething issues,” Sinha added.last_img read more
