Photo/PSCUNAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 26 – President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday said the Government has started an initiative to make tennis a public sport available for Kenyans from all walks of life. The President said Kenya will follow the example of the United States where many tennis champions horned their skills in public courts rather than exclusive clubs for the well to do. The President made the statement when he held talks with officials of Ministry of Sports, International Tennis Federation, African Tennis Confederation and Tennis Kenya on the construction of a tennis training centre worth Sh700mn at the Kasarani Sports Complex. The National Training Centre, which will also host the International Tennis Federation training centre for Africa, will be the second of its kind in Africa and is bound to put Kenya at the apex of international tennis. The other ITF training centre in Africa is in Morocco but the Kenyan one will have the distinction of being at a high altitude. The new facility will make Nairobi a hub for tennis in Eastern and Southern Africa. The centre can also be a source of huge revenue from sports tourism when it hosts tennis features. The President said the Government has already allocated Sh30 million to start the construction of the facility and more is expected to be allocated through the next budget. Photo/PSCUPresident Kenyatta said Kenya is a sporting nation but so far little efforts have been made to make tennis a public sport.“Tennis has not been available to our people. We want to make it a public sport that is open to the people. The talent is there but it is facilities that have been lacking,” said the President. The President said the Government has already allocated Sh30 million to start the construction of the facility and more is expected to be allocated through the next budget. The Government has allocated 10 acres of land at the Kasarani Sports Complex for the construction of the training centre and the National Youth Service as well as the Ministry of Sports are contributing to its development. The President said he will urge the Kenyan private sector to support the development of tennis as a public sport.“Making tennis a public sport will inspire the youth and that is what is important for us,” said the President. The President said he will urge the Kenyan private sector to support the development of tennis as a public sport. Photo/PSCUPrincipal Secretary Ministry of Sports Peter Kaberia said tennis has not taken root because of the lack of public courts but that will change with the development of the centre at Kasarani. The President of ITF, David Haggerty, said the public tennis facility and training centre will be one if its kind and will provide opportunity for talent development.“In the US most of the champions come from public facilities. The home of Kenya tennis can give an opportunity for disadvantaged youth to become tennis stars,” said Haggerty. The President of African Tennis Confederation, Tarak Cherif, said the management of tennis in Kenya is one of the best in Africa and the new facility will enable the sport to rise to a new level. The Acting Director General of Tennis Kenya Saima Odima said Kenya will in June host the Davis Cup. He said 14 countries have already confirmed participation in the event.Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua and Secretary Administration State Department of Sports, Kassim Farah, also attended the meeting.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Maghery Band make a thrilling Tattoo debut

first_imgThe Maghery Band from Donegal made their exciting debut at the Belfast International Tattoo in the SSE Arena earlier this month.20,000 spectators across 3 shows were introduced to the Donegal spectacle in the second half of the Belfast International Tattoo show ahead of the finale number and wowed the audience.Cliff Mason PhotographyThe audience were intrigued by the entertaining band whose innovative and masterful performances have advanced their status. The band themselves found this to be an inspiring experience. Despite having international and All-Ireland-champion status, members had, until now, mainly performed for thousands in passing. To experience thousands of spectators focused on you for an entire 15minute performance and embrace their reactions along the way was so exciting for the group.Cliff Mason PhotographyIt was an honour for the band to be embraced as they were at the Belfast International Tattoo.Local supporters and those from the Maghery and Dungloe community travelled to Belfast to also witness the band debut on the magnificent Tattoo stage. Messages of the locals’ pride in the band flooded in over the course of the four days that they were in Belfast.Brian Wilson and Colin Wasson, organisers of the Belfast Tattoo, made the Donegal band feel right at home on the grand Tattoo stage. This is the beginning of a great Tattoo career for the band who now plan to develop their routine for the Tattoo stage. Cliff Mason PhotographyThe band found this to be a great learning curve in performing and the memories and experience for the youth and adults alike involved is one that they will cherish for a lifetime. This has been an inspiring year for the performing academy known as Maghery Band and they show no signs of slowing down.Performing in the finale alongside the HM Royal Marines, Adest Musica, Churchill Flute Band, Ballywalter Flute Band, Mass pipe bands from Northern Ireland and Australia, dancers Stag and Thistle from Canada and Bicycle act Juliana Bicyle Team is held in great esteem. The Maghery Band are inundated at present with worldwide invites. As a voluntary and non profit group they will have to plan these invites as well as they can so they can undertake fundraising efforts all whilst representing Maghery, Dungloe, Donegal and Ireland as a whole.Information for new recruits and auditions for the academy can be obtained from Annemarie, chairperson, drill and drum major instructor on 0879247837.Cliff Mason PhotographyThey invite young and old who have a passion for music and performance and who would like to get involved to get in contact. The academy will be planning for the next few years for travel and performing and invite anyone who that may appeal to to enquire with them to see how to get involved. The academy are on a short break at present following their last parade of the Band year at Harvest Fayre in Glenties. The champions are currently planning their Annual Champions Ball which will take place this November but soon practise will commence as the band prepare for their 2020 commitments. At the end of every year, the band like to see that the future is bright, and for this impressive band the future appears extremely bright for years to come.Maghery Band make a thrilling Tattoo debut was last modified: September 27th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:belfast international tattooMaghery Bandlast_img read more

More Resources for Mobile Design Inspiration

first_imgNot too long ago, we highlighted a new website for mobile design inspiration called Mobile-Patterns.com. The site, created by Foursquare’s lead designer Mari Sheibley, is meant to serve as a home to mobile screenshots showcasing various UI elements, including sign-up flows, splash screens, comment boxes and more. However, Mobile-Patterns isn’t the only site of its kind. Thanks to ReadWriteMobile commenters and others for listing more resources deserving a mention. We’ve rounded these up below. While not necessarily new, the sites below can also serve as valuable resources for mobile designers in need of inspiration. To begin, a popular site called pttrns is a resource for iOS designers. It offers a larger selection of screenshots than Sheibley’s new site – in fact, there are over 30 categories of screenshots hosted there. In addition, as a commenter noted, you can view the samples at both 1x and 2x (retina) size. Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces sarah perez Finally, one of our favorites comes from Chris of Mobile GUI who let us know about MobileGUI.net/inspiration. There, you’ll find a complete list of mobile design galleries which is kept up-to-date as new ones arise. Currently, the list includes Android Patterns, App Sites, CSS iPhone, dribble, ember, FWA Mobile Gallery, iOS Inspires Me, iOSpirations, jQuery Mobile Gallery, Landing Pad, Make Better Apps, Mobile Awesomeness, Mobile UI Patterns, Moobile Frames, pttrns, Refined Mobile, TapFancy and TappGala. Animated Titles with Text Presets in After Effects

first_imgPremiere Pro video editors should take advantage of the great titling and lower-thirds tools in After Effects. Discover how the text presets in AE can help you get professional results. The text tools in Premiere Pro are sufficient for basic titling, but if you want a more robust toolset, After Effects is the way to go. This tutorial lays out the basics of creating animated text in After Effects using presets. Once you’ve got the basics down, experiment and create your own unique text effects. Let’s jump in!Premiere and AE Text WorkflowOpen a Premiere Pro Project, and then select File > Dynamic Link  > Create New After Effects Composition. Save the Project, and a new After Effects composition is created for you. From the Layer Menu in Adobe After Effects, select  New >Text, which creates text centered in the composition.Start typing to create your title. Click on the text layer in the After Effects composition to select it and now you can adjust your text in the Character Palette. From the Animation Menu select Browse Animation Presets. This launches Adobe Bridge, which lets you see the various presets that ship with After Effects. Note: The Text category only works with After Effects text.Double click on the Text folder…Then Double-click on the Animate In Folder. For this example, we’ll use the preset called Fade Up Characters. Click once on this preset to see a preview of the animation. Now, double-click on Fade Up Characters and this will apply the preset to your selected layer in After Effects.Important: Make sure the layer is selected before you go to Adobe Bridge or it will create a new text layer with the placeholder text “Adobe After Effects.”Use the shortcut Command + Tab (Mac) or Alt + Tab (PC) to quickly get back to After Effects. In the After Effects Preview Panel, click the RAM Preview button and watch the text animate on.With the layer selected in the Composition, Press U (uber key) to reveal the keyframes created by the preset. To change the length of the animation, click on the second keyframe and move it closer (faster) or further apart (slower). Select both keyframes by clicking on Start, right-click and choose Keyframe Assistant > Easy Ease.Once you save the file in After Effects, it will save back to your Premiere Pro project via Dynamic Link. This is a quick and easy way to harness all the text presets in After Effects in order to spice up your Premiere Pro video edits. If you’re looking for more AE insight, be sure to visit PremiumBeat’s After Effects archive! Dick Vermeil Retired A Decade Ago Will You Please Stop Using His

2TennesseeJacksonville32:49190.05 1JacksonvilleHouston20:49180.29 Times when teams clearly should have gone for 22017 NFL season through Week 2 2New OrleansNew England45:04-170.10 2DallasDenver414:24-190.05 Magnitude is the amount that a team’s expected win percentage is improved by making the right decision.Source: ESPN Stats & Information Group. Teams made the correct decision in four of those 16 cases, for a 25 percent rate. (For comparison: Since 2015, regular season and playoffs combined, teams have gone for 2 points 27 percent of the time in “clear go” scenarios.)Of course, a decision being clear-cut doesn’t mean that it matters a whole lot, but note that even among the decisions with the most significant consequences, teams are still making the wrong choices regularly (most likely because of adherence to Dick Vermeil’s rigid and outdated system that leads them to repeat the same mistakes over and over). In particular, the aforementioned scenarios of being down 4, 8, or 11 points late are both quite clear and quite important.Another significant case is when a team scores to pull within 2: Go for 2! This may seem like an obvious one, but since 2015, teams in this situation have chosen to kick the extra point as late as the fourth quarter (once, which is way too many times), and they’ve done so half the time in the third quarter (6 of 12, and still very bad) and 77 percent of the time in the second quarter (10 of 13, and still pretty bad, especially for such an early decision). This season, teams down 4, 8 or 11 late are holding steady at a 0 percent correct rate, having attempted extra points five out of five times when they “clearly” should have gone for it. That means that over the past three season, they’ve gotten these right exactly zero times in 105 chances. On a slightly brighter note, teams have been down 2 points after a touchdown twice this season — both in the third quarter — and they’ve correctly tried to tie the game both times! It’s not quite the revolution — it isn’t really even shots fired. But maybe, just maybe … 1DetroitArizona33:07-21.28✓ 1L.A. ChargersDenver47:00-41.62 2ClevelandBaltimore24:56-80.24 1ClevelandPittsburgh43:36-52.23✓ 1DetroitArizona49:2740.43✓ Before the Super Bowl in February, we published a fairly comprehensive guide for when to go for 2, simplified into one slightly complicated (but very easy to use once you get the hang of it!) chart. In addition to hopefully demystifying how to judge a lot of borderline situations, we identified some fairly clear-cut cases in which NFL coaches should choose to go for 2 but don’t. Ever.My hope, of course, was that teams would read this (or figure it out on their own) and that we’d see an immediate and cataclysmic shift in 2-point strategy — like going for it when down 4, 8, or 11 after scoring a touchdown late (which are not only real cases, but ones that are usually clear-cut and significant). But, alas, no such luck. The logic is pretty simple: If you can estimate your team’s chances of winning with an X point lead/deficit (X points being how many points you are up or down following a touchdown) and your chances of winning with X+1 and X+2, the decision follows from simple arithmetic. In fact, given that 2-point attempts and extra-point attempts taken from the 15-yard line (under the new rules implemented in 2015) now have roughly the same expected point value (both around 0.95 points), the choice is easier than ever. Simply calculate (or estimate):The improvement in win percentage if your point margin changed from X to X+1.The improvement in win percentage if your point margin changed from X+1 to X+2.If the first number is greater, kick the extra point. If the second is, go for 2.Now, you can estimate or intuit these differences on your own on the fly, or you can use a fancy win probability model like we have,1Specifically, a version of the model built by Brian Burke of ESPN’s Stats & Information Group. but the logic is the same.Of course, we’ve taken it a bit further — our chart uses multiple sets of assumptions to create a range for each scenario covering teams that are relatively better or worse at 2-point conversions than our baseline. In case you missed it, here’s the chart:2You should be able to use this chart to pretty accurately assess most decisions you see. If you’re skeptical of the chart, you could intuit your own using the method outlined in that article. 1ChicagoAtlanta47:26-41.33 2PhiladelphiaKansas City40:08-80.05 2ArizonaIndianapolis47:38-41.28 A quick note on reading this chart: It may look a little “loud,” but that’s a feature for looking up scenarios lightning-fast. For a quick approximation, you first look at the minichart corresponding to the point spread (after the touchdown). If the quarter you’re in is shaded bright purple, you probably want to kick; if it’s bright orange, you should probably go for it. If you’re in a rush, you could stop there and be in pretty decent shape.Through the first two weeks of this NFL season, teams have gone for 2 (from the 2-yard line) eight times overall. More importantly, of the 30 times that the numbers say they should have gone for 2, they did so just four times, for a rate of 13 percent. Since 2015, in the regular season and playoffs, teams that should have gone for 2 have done so around 15 percent of the time. Now, of course it’s possible that some teams are better or worse at going for 2 than average, but it isn’t possible that 85 percent of teams are worse than average. I’ve also calculated how often teams should “clearly” go for 2 — meaning situations in which they should go for it even if they are relatively quite bad at 2-point attempts3I set this threshold at a 40 percent expected conversion rate (the same as the bottom of the range lines in the chart above). Or 7.5 percentage points lower than the baseline conversion rate assumption of 47.5 percent. This is a rough best estimate (after discussion with Burke, among others) for how bad teams who are very bad at 2-point conversions actually are). — and there have been 16 such cases through Week 2:4For this season’s scenarios, I’ve analyzed each attempt individually (down to the second), while the chart above is calculated minute by minute, so there may be slight variations between the two.
