Regardless Of Rumors, Butch Jones Is On The Hot Seat

first_imgButch Jones surrounded by his players.Twitter/@6NewsThis season was supposed to be a return to form for the proud Tennessee program. While Georgia was the favorite to win the SEC East, some liked the young, talented Volunteers to take a big leap and challenge the Bulldogs for a spot in the SEC Championship. After rough Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley regimes, Butch Jones looked like the guy to lead the Vols back to national relevance. Instead, Tennessee is 2-3, with brutal losses to Oklahoma, and most recently Arkansas, another disappointing SEC program. The three losses have featured incredibly questionable coaching decisions, and the tide has seemingly turned for head coach Butch Jones.Butch Jones was a darling in Knoxville just three weeks ago, but now some Tennessee fans want to see him gone.To all the people wanting to fire Butch Jones: Charlie Strong will probably be available at the end of the season. #vols— Wesley Mason (@RealWMason) October 4, 2015What’s it like to have all the tools and still fail @UTCoachJones— Will Caffey (@Caffeyteria) October 4, 2015After tonight I am convinced Butch Jones isn’t the man for the job. Ohio State mens soccer team ready to host Big Ten tournament quarterfinal

Photo Credit: Amanda Etchison | Editor in ChiefThe Ohio State men’s soccer team overcame all odds and clinched the Big Ten title in a 3-1 victory against Michigan on Wednesday night, awarding them the top seed in the Big Ten tournament.Since the Buckeyes finished the regular season at the top of the conference, OSU will host the first round and quarterfinals at home at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.OSU coach John Bluem said, even as his team realizes the importance of the upcoming postseason games, it can’t change its mindset.“It’s one game at a time,” Bluem said. This has been the motto for the Scarlet and Gray this year and the team continues to follow it.Earlier in the season, the Buckeyes lost four straight games until they managed to snap the streak against Akron in a 3-3 tie on Sept. 16.Following the tie against Akron, the Buckeyes took off and went on an eight-game winning streak, putting the Buckeyes at No. 1 in the Big Ten.Rutgers put a halt to the Scarlet and Gray’s winning streak in a 1-0 game on Oct. 25.“We were unbeaten for 10 games, but one loss doesn’t change anything,” senior defender and co-captain Liam Doyle, who was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year on Friday, said following the game against Rutgers. “It reignites the focus for what lies ahead.”The loss against Rutgers did just that for the Buckeyes when they bounced back and won a 1-0 shutout against Maryland, a team that is recognized for its physicality and ability to attack. The win against Maryland put the Buckeyes back on top with the chance to win the Big Ten title against Michigan. All season, the Buckeyes’ defense dominated on the field, but on Wednesday the Scarlet and Gray offense ignited as three goals were scored, giving the Buckeyes a chance to call themselves Big Ten champions.“This season has been a huge roller coaster for us, but right now we’re all pretty confident and we trust the game plan that we have,” junior forward Danny Jensen said. “It took us a little while to find our identity, but now that we have that, the vibe inside the locker room is pretty good.”The first round of the Big Ten tournament is scheduled to be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, when No. 8-seeded Michigan State and No. 9-seeded Penn State will face each other head-to-head. The Buckeyes are scheduled play the winner of the match.OSU squared off against both teams once this season. On Sept. 20, the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions went to two overtime periods before the match concluded in a 1-1 draw in Columbus. OSU traveled to East Lansing, Michigan, on Oct. 4 and topped the Spartans 2-1. The Scarlet and Gray is set to take on either Michigan State or Penn State at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. What’s nextFollowing the quarterfinals, the top remaining team will host the semifinals and championship on Friday and Sunday. read more

Commentary Sir Charles sermon still rings true today

Charles Barkley is a prophet. But not for thinking the Bulls are going to beat the Heat, because that’s not going to happen. For the record, the Mavericks won’t be toppling Miami’s trio either. No, the “Round Mound of Rebound” 1993 Nike commercial makes him clairvoyant: “I am not a role model. I am not paid to be a role model. I am paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court. Parents should be role models. Just because I dunk a basketball doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.” It’s an immutable truth. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t reflect the real world. Growing up, my favorite athlete was Ken Griffey Jr. I loved everything about him. I gawked at his poetry-in-motion swing. I reveled in the fact that he was a true five-tool player in for most of his career. And, as a native of Cincinnati, I felt extreme pride that he grew up in the Queen City and spent eight-plus seasons playing for the Reds. Most of all, I admired Griffey for constantly having a smile on his face. He thoroughly enjoyed playing the game of baseball. But at no point did I consider Griffey a role model. Luckily for me, I had my mom, my dad and my grandpa to emulate. Many other kids aren’t so lucky. They grow up in fragmented families, often with one, or even no, parent or guardian to speak of. Those people, not professional athletes, should serve as life’s prototypes for kids. It’s a shame some children aren’t even given a choice. Both role models and athletes have character flaws, but the difference is, your parents’ mistakes won’t be broadcast on ESPN or dissected in discussion boards over the Internet. Instead, your parents can have their cake and eat it too. They can sit you down and chat about your mistakes and also their own errors in judgment. Michael Jordan, on the other hand, can’t walk through your front door, sit down on your couch and open up about his past gambling addiction or divorce. Furthermore, it’s hard to trust an athlete to set the right example. Marion Jones, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Tiger Woods and LeBron James: All of them are professional athletes who, at some time, have captivated the attention of sports fans and even non-sports aficionados with their skills and runs on the history books. Jones, Bonds, McGwire and Sosa cheated. Woods cheated on his wife many times over. James cheated the idea of tactfulness. The truth is clear: Barkley’s right — don’t try to “Be like Mike.” Unless, of course, that’s your father’s name. read more

Market optimism trumps uncertainties in November

first_imgIndian markets saw the triumph of optimism over a host of negative build-ups in November.A week that had five successive sessions of advancing benchmark indices capped the month’s return of the bulls. The ground situation for the markets has been fraught with uncertainties. India has been in the middle of elections in five states, considered crucial for the Narendra Modi government that will enter the election year soon. The general election is likely sometime in the middle of next year.Oil exporting nations have announced a production cut that should have driven up international crude prices. But the prices have been sliding and have dipped below the psychological level of $60 a barrel. The US sanctions on Iran after President Trump tore up the nuclear deal were expected to bite this month. Once the Iranian crude evaporated from the international market, the oil prices should have shot up.However, the huge US inventories and increasing production there have kept the price suppressed. Some energy market circles also see an agreement between Washington and Riyadh behind the soft oil in an attempt to harm Tehran. The gathering trade war clouds between the US and China are also effectively suppressing an oil uptick. The situation has lowered India’s oil import bill. The Indian markets were expected to remain cautious of oil prices because of international uncertainties. But the market has ignored the uncertainties and found traction in foreign institutional investors’ (FIIs) return. The oil slide has strengthened the rupee against the dollar. The stronger rupee has helped the market to stabilise further by allaying worries of further currency sell-off.Analysts still advice caution but are happy that the net flow of FII investments turned positive after months in the negative terrain. The bloodbath of September and October saw the flight of about Rs 35,000 crore from the markets, according to some estimates. November has been a different story with foreign investors returning for juicy trades. They have pumped in at least Rs 12,000 crore over the past few weeks, estimates say. Both Sensex and Nifty posted new highs and technical experts suggest they have found new supports. Sensex closed on Friday at 36,194 and Nifty on 10,876. Having reclaimed the support of 10,800, Nifty is on way to breach 11,000, say technical experts.Technical expertsIndian optimism has fond warmth in Morgan Stanley’s overweight rating and HSBC’s upgrading to neutral from underweight.”The market ended on a positive note after a roller-coaster effect ahead of G20 meet and expectation of oil production cut in the upcoming Opec meet,” said Vinod Nair of Geojit Financial Services. “On the other hand, FIIs turned positive as fall in oil prices to bearish territory and appreciation in rupee stimulated hopes of economic growth.”FIIs poured in more than Rs 12,000 crore (Debt & Equity) in Indian markets according to SEBI data on Moneycontrol. The month distinguished itself with more than average rise of midcaps and small caps, which usually are the worst hit in an uncertain market. In the S&P BSE Small Cap index, as many as 50 stocks rallied 20 per cent to 171 per cent in November, according to Money Control. Three stocks more than doubled investors’ wealth in the same period. In the S&P BSE Mid Cap index, three stocks rose between 20 per cent and 40 per cent.Technical traders are happy that Sensex and Nifty regained crucial support levels during the month – the Sensex back above 36,000 and Nifty above 10,800. Experts feel that barring a disastrous result in the second week of December the momentum should continue.last_img read more

Report Finds Mixed Results From Electric Market Deregulation

first_img To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Roy Luck via FlickrA view of power lines near Thompsons, TX, southwest of Houston.A new report finds positive signs, but some “mixed results”, from deregulating the Texas electric market. The consumer advocacy group Texas Coalition for Affordable Power used federal government data to track Texans’ electric bills since deregulation. The report says electricity has gotten cheaper in cities where you can choose your provider, but it’s still been historically more expensive compared to cities with one provider.“I think it’s a good news/bad news story,” says R.A. Dyer, the group’s spokesperson. “I think the market is progressing.”The good news from the report is that in places where you can shop around for electricity – like Houston and Dallas – you can find better deals than in San Antonio or Austin, where there’s one provider. The bad news?“What we have seen, year after year, is prices are consistently higher in areas of the state with retail electric competition,” Dyer says.Still, the report found that gap is shrinking, and there are other positive signs. A separate study from Rice University – one that looked at different and more recent data – found that in 2016, some deregulated parts of Texas finally had cheaper electricity.“Our prices in the state are very closely linked to the natural gas price,” says Michelle Fost, Chief Energy Economist at the University of Texas’ Center for Energy Economics. So, as long as natural gas stays relatively cheap, you could expect the trend of ever-cheaper electricity in deregulated cities to continue.
