Indian rupee falls to new low since Narendra Modi came to power

first_imgThe Indian rupee hit a new low of 68.86 against the US dollar on Thursday, as foreign investors continue to sell their holdings in view of an imminent interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve next month. The previous all-time low for the domestic currency was 68.85 on August 28, 2013.On that day, the rupee experienced its biggest single-day fall in 18 years but gained later to close at 66.24.Narendra Modi was voted to power in May 2014 when his BJP-led NDA swept the general elections, ousting the Congress-led UPA that remained in office for 10 years.Earlier, on Thursday, the rupee opened 19 paise lower at 68.76.Foreign institutional investors (FIIs/FPIs) have been on a selling spree in November, offloading debt and equities worth $3.18 billion, the Mint reported. The fall is not confined to the Indian rupee alone. “Asian currencies’ drop to a seven-year low will probably deter regional central banks from easing monetary policies as the prospects of higher U.S. rates spurred capital outflows,” Geojit BNP Paribas said in a note on Thursday morning. The BSE Sensex closed at 25,860 on Thursday, down 192 points, or 0.74 percent. Top index losers were Tata Motors, Sun Pharma and Axis Bank.”Continued weakness in rupee against dollar, last hour of expiry square-off and the disruptions in Rajya debate over demonetization have dragged the market. This phase of consolidation is likely to continue in the near-term given the domestic setbacks and losing strength of the EMs due to buoyant bond yield,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services, said in a note. The BSE Bankex closed 1.45 percent, with the top losers being Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, Federal Bank and IndusInd Bank. State Bank of India ended with gains of 1.14 percent at Rs 261.70.last_img read more

Procession rejects postponement of quota protests

first_imgA faction of quota protesters brought out a procession at the Dhaka University campus area on Tuesday. Photo: Mosabber HossainA faction of the students and job-seeking youth has rejected the decision to postpone the demonstration demanding reforms of the quota system in public service, following talks with the government.Apparently infuriated by the postponement of the campaign before any formal announcement, the protesters in  hundreds held a rallly on the Dhaka University campus on Tuesday. Some of the protesters requested others not to bring out any procession and to wait until the government scrutises the matter and gives its decision after 7 May.In fact, the road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, in a meeting with a delegation of 20 demonstrators, said they had agreed to postpone the programme until 7 May.Some protesters expressed their dissent on Monday evening. On Tuesday they brought out a procession, chanting slogans demanding reforms in the quota system in public service. The protagonists of the dialogue with the government requested all others to ignore the call to continue the campaign, reports UNB.Rashed Khan, joint convener of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council, came up with the request while briefing reporters in front of Dhaka University Central Library premises. He alleged that a faction, from the beginning of the movement, was trying to disrupt their programme.Rashed also said that they have suspended their movement until 7 May following the assurance from the prime minister on quota reformation. He requested journalists not to cover any programme of the ‘dissidents’ as that might create confusion among people. The protesters apologised for assaulting some journalists during the Monday protest. The leaders of the council demanded an apology from agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury for her comments in parliament on Monday night. The ‘dissidents’ are in favour of carrying out their movement on the university campus, demanding reforms in the quota system within one week.last_img read more

IPython 70 releases with AsyncIO Integration and new Async libraries

first_imgIPython team released version 7.0 of IPython, yesterday. IPython is a powerful Python interactive shell with features such as advanced tab completion, syntactic coloration, and more. IPython 7.0 explores new features such as AsyncIO integration, new Async libraries, and Async support in Notebooks. IPython (Interactive Python) provides a rich toolkit for interactive computing in multiple programming languages. It’s the Jupyter kernel for Python used by millions of users. Let’s discuss the key features in IPython 7.0 release. AsyncIO Integration IPython 7.0 comes with the integration of IPython and AsyncIO. This means that you don’t have to import or learn about asyncIO anymore. AsyncIO is a library which lets you write concurrent code using the async/await syntax. The asyncIO library is used as a foundation for multiple Python asynchronous frameworks providing high-performance network, web-servers, database connection libraries, distributed task queues, etc. Just remember that asyncIO is an async function, it won’t magically make your code faster but will make it easier to write. New Async Libraries (Curio and Trio integration) Python consists of keywords async and await. This helps simplify the use of asynchronous programming and the standardization around asyncIO. It also allows experimentation with the new paradigms for asynchronous libraries. Now, two new Async Libraries namely Curio and Trio, have been added in IPython 7.0. Both of these libraries explore ways to write asynchronous programs. They also explore how to use async, awaits, and coroutines when starting from a blank slate. Curio is a library which helps perform concurrent I/O and common system programming tasks. It makes use of the Python coroutines and the explicit async/await syntax. Trio is an async/await-native I/O library for Python. It lets you write programs that do multiple things at the same time with parallelized I/O. Async support in Notebooks Async code will now work in a notebook when using ipykernel for Jupyter users. With IPython 7.0, async will work with all the frontends that support the Jupyter Protocol, including the classic Notebook, JupyterLab, Hydrogen, nteract desktop, and nteract web. The default code will run in the existing asyncIO/tornado loop that runs the kernel. For more information, check out the official release notes.
