He was found to be a sexually violent predator in 2009 and was committed to the Department of State Hospitals to undergo treatment.Last year, Smith petitioned the Superior Court to be released through the Conditional Release Program for sex offenders and, after a trial, Judge Howard Shore found Smith amenable to being released.David Jimenez, who currently lives near where Smith is going to reside on Desert Rose Ranch Road, told the judge he didn’t think it was fair that Smith was being placed in Jacumba Hot Springs. Jacumba Hot Springs is located in the far reaches of southeastern San Diego County.“I’m very uncomfortable,” Jimenez said outside court. “I do think Jacumba is a dumping ground for predators.”Jimenez, who is moving closer to the city of San Diego for health reasons, said another sexually violent predator lived in the same home on Desert Rose Ranch Road previously and caused no problems, but he believes Smith moving in will drop the value of his home as he tries to sell it. Dell Inc is set to announce an agreement on Monday to sell its non-core information technology consulting division to Japan’s NTT Data Corp for $3.5 billion, people familiar with the matter said on Sunday. The move will allow U.S. computer maker Dell to trim some of the $43 billion in debt it is taking on to fund its pending cash-and-stock acquisition of data storage provider EMC Corp, a deal worth close to $60 billion. The sale will also offer NTT Data, one of the world’s largest technology services companies, a bigger foothold in the United States, where it is looking to expand in healthcare IT, insurance and financial services consulting.Announcement of any agreement is subject to NTT Data’s board approving the deal when it meets in Tokyo, the people said, asking not to be identified because the transaction is not yet official.Dell has also made progress in syndicating $10 billion of its financing package for the EMC acquisition dubbed ‘term loan A’, the people said. This is expected to be increased in size by $500 million to $750 million due to strong demand, with the extra money to be used to downsize some of the more expensive tranches of the remaining $33 billion in financing, the people added. The group of banks participating in the term loan A has been expanded from the original eight underwriters to 25, with more expected to join before the syndication is completed in the next week, the people said.Dell declined to comment, while NTT Data did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters had reported first on Feb. 12 that NTT Data was in exclusive talks to buy Dell’s IT services unit.Formerly known as Perot Systems, Dell’s IT services division is a major provider of technology consulting to hospitals and government departments. Founded in 1988 by former U.S. presidential candidate Ross Perot, it was acquired by Dell in 2009 for $3.9 billion. However, Dell has since divested some of the unit’s operations and integrated some others, which it is not including in the sale. Some of the unit’s capabilities were seen by Dell as redundant in the wake of the acquisition of EMC.Dell has also been speaking to private equity firms about selling Quest Software, which helps with information technology management, as well as SonicWall, an e-mail encryption and data security provider, Reuters has previously reported. Together, Quest and SonicWall could be worth up to $4 billion.Dell’s acquisition of EMC, which is backed by founder and Chief Excutive Michael Dell as well as private equity firm Silver Lake Partners, is subject to approval by EMC shareholders. EMC is expected to hold a shareholder vote on the Dell deal in May, allowing for the transaction to be completed sometime between July and October.
The Indian rupee hit a new low of 68.86 against the US dollar on Thursday, as foreign investors continue to sell their holdings in view of an imminent interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve next month. The previous all-time low for the domestic currency was 68.85 on August 28, 2013.On that day, the rupee experienced its biggest single-day fall in 18 years but gained later to close at 66.24.Narendra Modi was voted to power in May 2014 when his BJP-led NDA swept the general elections, ousting the Congress-led UPA that remained in office for 10 years.Earlier, on Thursday, the rupee opened 19 paise lower at 68.76.Foreign institutional investors (FIIs/FPIs) have been on a selling spree in November, offloading debt and equities worth $3.18 billion, the Mint reported. The fall is not confined to the Indian rupee alone. “Asian currencies’ drop to a seven-year low will probably deter regional central banks from easing monetary policies as the prospects of higher U.S. rates spurred capital outflows,” Geojit BNP Paribas said in a note on Thursday morning. The BSE Sensex closed at 25,860 on Thursday, down 192 points, or 0.74 percent. Top index losers were Tata Motors, Sun Pharma and Axis Bank.”Continued weakness in rupee against dollar, last hour of expiry square-off and the disruptions in Rajya debate over demonetization have dragged the market. This phase of consolidation is likely to continue in the near-term given the domestic setbacks and losing strength of the EMs due to buoyant bond yield,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services, said in a note. The BSE Bankex closed 1.45 percent, with the top losers being Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, Federal Bank and IndusInd Bank. State Bank of India ended with gains of 1.14 percent at Rs 261.70.
By Brianna McAdoo, Special to the AFROAs the 2020 race for Presidency of the United States unfolds, climate change is amongst one of the most pressing issues that the candidates are being asked to share their plan of action for. Americans across the United States are collectively acknowledging the climate crisis that has been unfolding over the years, 53 percent of Americans identify global warming as an “urgent problem that requires immediate government action,” according to a 2018 survey conducted by Langer Research Associates. Accordingly to the Union of Concerned Scientists, people of color are being disproportionately affected by global warming due to alarmingly high exposure of PM2.5, a dangerous air pollutant. (Courtesy Photo)While the collective consciousness in America and throughout the world is building around the climate crisis, there is an urgent need to recognize that people of color in America are disproportionately left the most vulnerable to the effects of global warming and climate change. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) have released a new study that highlights the disproportionately detrimental implications of air pollution on Asian American, Latino and African Americans in the District of Columbia. The UCS Air Quality Report looks at the alarmingly high exposure of PM2.5, a dangerous air pollutant. PM2.5 is an air pollutant that is about 2.5 microns or less. The pollutant can be emitted into the air through the burning of both diesel and gasoline fuel. Due to its size, PM2.5 can spread rapidly and easily into one’s bloodstreams and can cause short term effects including irritation, sneezing, coughing and trouble breathing. The air pollutant is also known to put people in jeopardy of long term health effects including respiratory and cardiovascular issues, some of which have resulted in hospitalization and deaths. Children, the elderly and people with a history of respiratory and heart problems are at higher risk if exposed to PM2.5. The report will provide more detail about the exposure levels of PM2.5 in these communities of color in Washington D.C. in addition to more details about the source of exposure, a way forward for a more environmentally friendly transportation system and the District’s involvement in the Transportation & Climate Initiative. For more information about the Union of Concerned Scientists, you can visit www.ucsusa.org.
