Firefighters keep careful eye on next set of Santa Anas

The CDF will also post an additional 25 engines, 14 bulldozer crews, 28 hand crews and extra helicopters and air tankers at critical spots around the region, Berlant said. “We’re talking about hundreds of additional firefighters,” he said. Long linked to devastating fires, the seasonal Santa Ana winds are created when high pressure over the Great Basin sends cold, dry air rushing toward Southern California, where it warms rapidly and speeds up as it squeezes down mountain passes and canyons and blows out to sea. A fire weather planning forecast issued Monday by the National Weather Service office in San Diego said the outlook for Friday and Saturday was for a possible “weak to moderate Santa Ana wind event.” “The exact strength of the offshore flow is still uncertain but there is potential for moderately strong gusty winds through and below mountain canyons and passes. Offshore winds will weaken by Sunday,” the forecast said.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! Firefighters still mopping up last week’s firestorms are preparing for another round of Santa Ana winds this weekend. The notorious Santa Anas, predicted to arrive Friday, will have sustained winds of 15 mph – much weaker than the fierce blasts of dry air that spread flames last week, but still strong enough to cause trouble to exhausted crews. “One of the reasons we’re monitoring these winds so closely is that Santa Ana winds are very unpredictable,” said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. “We are going to be prepared for this wind event.” Berlant said the winds are expected to last through Saturday before dying down. last_img read more

Workshop at New Riegel School on June 23 and 24. Any teacher, formal or informal, preschool to high school grade level, from anywhere in Ohio is welcome to attend.Featuring sessions, field trips, resources and classroom ready activities, our workshop’s theme will be the traditional fable of The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse. The conflicts, choices and conservation efforts of town and country people are nothing new and the speakers will give attending teachers plenty of background, lessons and alternative applications for helping students explore, understand and ultimately decide which mouse they relate to best. As students learn the Ohio’s Next Generation Science Standards, we also strive to equip them with real world applications and life skills that will make them responsible and respectable adult conservationists — much like the two mice in the fable. The workshop is divided into two days. Country Mouse Day — Tuesday, June 23 — will offer sessions from the Ohio Corn Marketing Association, Crawford SWCD, Geological Society of America, and Kelly Schott. Field Trips will explore new ethanol and energy curriculum and area farms (with an underground twist) to learn and understand soil health with farmers and geology tour guides. During Town Mouse Day — Wednesday, June 24 — session speakers will cover scientific inquiry with a live animal session from the Toledo Zoo,  the Sandusky River Valley Beekeeper’s Association,  a STEM session with Bob Horton and the Toledo water crisis from Harmful Algal Bloom. Field trips will take you to the town of Tiffin to visit the Franciscan Earth Literacy Center or the town of Fostoria to visit downtown to learn about the trains, museums & how to photograph it all.Complete session and field trip descriptions are available at www.conservesenecacounty.com. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski)The NBA reacted in support of Portland’s Enes Kanter on Thursday, not long after the league’s Turkish-centric Twitter account failed to mention Kanter’s efforts in the Trail Blazers’ victory over Denver in Game 2 of the teams’ Western Conference semifinal series. The league also fired the Turkish company in charge of operating that account.ADVERTISEMENT Joel Embiid, 76ers pull ahead 2-1 after rout of Raptors Kanter has previously said that he will seek a U.S. passport; his Turkish one was canceled in 2017. Citing security concerns and a fear of being arrested, Kanter chose to miss two games outside of the U.S. so far in 2019 — when he was with the New York Knicks he did not accompany them for a game in London in January, and he didn’t travel with Portland for a game in Toronto on March 1.His reluctance to leave the U.S. coincides with Turkish officials seeking a “red notice” through Interpol and pursuing Kanter’s arrest since January, alleging that he backed exiled Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and provided financial support to his group. Gulen has been blamed for a failed coup on the Erdogan government in 2016; Kanter has dismissed that as a “fake coup” staged by Erdogan.Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games PLAY LIST 02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games01:44Philippines marks anniversary of massacre with calls for justice01:19Fire erupts in Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City01:07Trump talks impeachment while meeting NCAA athletes02:49World-class track facilities installed at NCC for SEA Games02:11Trump awards medals to Jon Voight, Alison Krauss Don’t miss out on the latest news and information.
