The Perfect Wall has all of the structure to the interior and all of the control functions to the exterior. Let’s start at the outside of the perfect wall with the cladding. Cladding provides three functions: 1. Aesthetics, 2. Protection from UV light 3. Physical, mechanical protection of the other control layers. Aesthetics matter because people don’t take care of ugly things. Ugliness is not sustainable. The longer something is around, the more resources it consumes, so the more resource efficient it is, and the fewer resources it uses over its lifetime. We want a beautiful building that lasts a long time and is ultra-efficient. Claddings should be completely open — we want air circulation behind the cladding system. The more air circulation, the better the system works. Sealants are purely aesthetic, they’re not functional. If the sealants fail, the primary air, thermal, vapor and rain control elements are not affected. If we take the perfect wall and lean it, we get the perfect roof. From the inside to the outside, the control layers are:StructureVapor control membraneInsulationCladdingSome of the old-timers will recognize this type of roof as an IRMA — Inverted Roof Membrane system. If you replace the ballast with dirt, grass, and a goat, you would get a green roof. (That was a joke.) Flip the roof and you get the perfect slab:Dirt and stonesInsulationVaporConcrete (structure)The physics of a foundation, wall and roof are the same (this is an Ah-Ha! moment). When we look at a section of the perfect roof, wall, and slab, and we get the other Ah-Ha! moment — the important parts are the corners. You have to connect the rain control element of the foundation to the rain control element of the walls, the air control element of the foundation to the air control element of the walls, the vapor control element of the foundation to the vapor control element of the walls, the thermal control element of the foundation to the thermal control element of the walls… Pretty fundamental stuff. Most failures occur where roofs connect to walls _Tip: Buy multi-colored pens_ Whenever we do design reviews in our office, we tell the youngsters to take a colored pen and trace the rain control layer around the building enclosure. If the pen has to leave the paper, they’ve identified a discontinuity that needs to be addressed. Use a different colored pen for each of the control layers. Whenever the pen leaves the paper, you’ve identified a flaw. It’s as simple as that. We find that the flaws are concentrated at the connecting elements. Windows complicate the perfect wall Now these are pretty easy, but it gets complicated. In the real world, someone pokes a hole in the building and we call that a window. Windows have to do everything that a wall does, and more. It has to control water, air, heat, and vapor; you want to be able to see through it, and every so often someone is going to want to open it too. Windows can actually do all of that stuff, which is pretty amazing. No wonder they’re so expensive. All we have to do is connect the rain control element of the window to the rain control element of the wall, the air control element of the window to the air control element of the wall, the vapor control element of the window to the vapor control element of the wall, the thermal control element of the window to the thermal control element of the wall. The reason we’ve been having so much trouble with window-to-wall connections is because we’ve been relying on one person to do all of this: His name is “By-Others.” Mr. By-Others shows up on all of these specs and you have to make sure he is not going to be responsible for all of these connections. Someone has to be responsible. The window industry doesn’t do us any favors either — they don’t tell us in their window system which part of these windows systems are responsible for controlling water, air, vapor and heat. In the absence of guidance, we have to assume that the innermost component of the window is where all four of those functions collapse. So we wrap the window openings and make the connection at the back — so that if the window should fail, the water will go to the outside. That’s how you design a building: water continuity, air continuity, vapor continuity, thermal continuity. It can’t be that simple, right? Well, the answer is, “Yes it is.” Podcasts: Podcast:Air Barriers vs. Vapor BarriersHow Heat Moves Through HomesEfflorescence = Water Damage Insulation Retrofits on Old Masonry BuildingsHow Air Affects a House RELATED ARTICLES Insulation Overview Insulating Roofs, Walls, and Floors Installing Fiberglass Right” Insulation Choices Can Foam Insulation Be Too Thick? In order of importance, they are: 1. Rain control 2. Air control 3. Vapor control 4. Thermal control Thermal control is the easiest to specify, calculate, and measure, so that’s what codes focus on. Codes typically ignore the most important layers because they’re the most difficult to specify. The vapor control layer is easier to specify than the air control layer, so codes obsess over specifying the vapor control layer and ignoring the air control layer. Video:

At a time when international athletes are worried about their security in India during the Commonwealth Games, the visiting Australian cricket team on Thursday gave thumbs up to the security arrangements for their tour against the hosts. Many star athletes have pulled out and several countries including Australia have issued travel warnings to their citizens, saying there is high risk of a terror strike during the Games.According to media reports, Australia is also sending a team of top cops to New Delhi to provide a high-level security cordon to its athletes for the Games. However, the Australian cricketers have described as “fantastic” the arrangements.”The security so far has been fantastic. We always get looked after very well in this country. Hyderabad, Mar 16 (PTI) President Pranab Mukherjee today suggested enhancing civil aviation infrastructure by building new greenfield airports to not only cater to “phenomenal” rise in passenger and cargo traffic, but also to connect tier 2 and 3 cities, especially in the Northeast.Inaugurating India Aviation 2016, a mega civil aviation expo and conference, at Begumpet airport here, Mukherjee noted that India still lags behind in terms of per capita air travels when compared to other countries.”It is estimated that India shall require about 800 aircraft by 2020 to cater to the phenomenal increase in air passenger and freight traffic. The supporting aviation infrastructure has to be suitably upgraded by building new greenfield airports, expanding existing airports and upgrading facilities for maintenance, repair and operations,” he said.Despite rapid growth of civil aviation industry in the country, “several tier 2 and tier 3 cities of India still remain unconnected or are inadequately connected with the national grid”, the President said.”With the existing economic centres reaching a saturation point, business activities are bound to move to newer destinations. Northeastern states still lack adequate air connectivity due to paucity of civil aviation infrastructure,” he said.”The deeper the air penetration to smaller cities, better the connectivity to Northeastern part of India,” he said. The President is on a day-long tour to Hyderabad for the fifth edition of biennial aviation event themed on Indias Civil Aviation Sector: Potential As Global Manufacturing and MRO Hub.Despite being ranked 9th in the world, the President pointed out that India was one of the “least” penetrated aviation markets globally with 0.04 trips per capita per annum as compared to 0.3 of China and more than 2 in the US.advertisementHowever, he said the civil aviation market is “poised” for a faster and sustainable growth with the development of 100 smart cities, new economic corridors, more than 50 new airports and expansion of existing airports. He underlined that air travel has ceased to be a luxury these days as the middle class population has grown by 60 per cent over the last five years to about 270 million in 2015. The rise in their incomes also “has enhanced their capacity to undertake air travel for business and leisure”, he noted.”This has resulted in further growth in the business of the low cost airlines,” he said and asked the industry to leverage the opportunity, saying it is estimated that by 2020, the total passenger traffic in India is likely to touch 421 million. This heralds well for the pair of Jitu and Heena as this was their second Gold World Cup stage gold together, having won the event in the New Delhi World Cup earlier this year.China have been leading the medal tally at Gabala with three out of the seven Gold medals won so far and a total of six medals.A total of 430 athletes from 45 countries are competing for medals at Gabala World Cup which will be the last chance for Rifle and Pistol shooters to qualify for the year end showpiece- the ISSF World Cup Finals (WCF), which has the eight best shooters of the world in each Olympic discipline along with reigning Olympic and World Championship medalists and wild-cards squaring-off with each other.advertisement
Port Lincoln is a regional community where touch is surviving in the Australian rules dominated state of South Australia. Being 600km from their governing body (Touch SA) and with very little access to develop a higher level of playing standard, Port Lincoln is a real touch outpost. Touch was introduced to Port Lincoln nearly 20 years ago through the local high school, before disappearing for several years. Club contact Gavin Walding credits the touch revival in Port Lincoln to Peter Tokarski in the early 1990’s. With a regional population of 15,000 and the enormous variety of sports, touch is considered one of the area’s strong fringe sports. Participation has varied from 200-400 over the past few years, with a good number of those players being juniors. The winter season is a small competition, with just a few sides. One side consists of over 45’s while another is based around seven junior players. All of the competitions are mixed with participation of numbers being the goal. It is for this reason they allow seven players on the field per side. During summer a junior after-school competition is run with great support from Touch SA, local schools and teachers. While you may be reading this and thinking Port Lincoln sounds like many other normal regional touch associations, it’s time to think again. This is their ANZAC Day clash or Easter matches of the AFL or NRL…It’s called the Cummins Classic and it’s certainly becoming classic. This year July 29th is the date. Both sides will embark on a tense combined 140km bus trip to Cummins, to play up bush in a regular grudge match between two sworn enemies. For six or seven local Cummins players, this is the one match played on their home turf and local pride is also at stake. Gavin Walding believes the Cummins Classic, about to enter it’s second year under the official title, but having been played for over five years now, could well become a Port Lincoln touch institution. “The Cummins classic is a great night with some of the 300 odd locals wandering down to watch the mad buggers that throw the ball backwards to go forwards,” he says. “It is also a great opportunity for the genuine footy bus trip with many a foggy head in the morning.” The teams taking the field for this year’s Cummins Classic are The Masters and The Rik Rik’s. Peter Tokarski (the legend credited with Port Lincoln’s touch revival) leads the Masters, who are the usual collection of those continuing to defy both physics and age to take the field, with their oldest player being over 60. The Masters make up a large proportion of the SA 45’s & 50’s masters sides, who have competed since the 1999 Australian masters with various success. Their opponents for the past two years have been a group of players based around the United Yeelanna football club, whose home ground is around 90km from Port Lincoln. Many of the Rik Rik’s are ex-students of the Masters’ leader, Peter Tokarski. For this auspicious round a few ring-ins tend to appear, along with around 300 locals, who may not fully understand the rules, but love the intensity and the underlying fun of the game. “By the end of the Classic the locals are yelling & cheering along with the players, helped of course by the bar conveniently located next to the field,” Gavin Walding says. After the game the best player receives their medallion and the winners gloat in their short-lived glory. Players and spectators alike then adjourn to the pub across the road for a chance to catch up with friends before boarding the bus for the trip back home. Keep tuned for a full match report in following months. By Rachel Moyle
