Board votes to cap student enrollment

first_img Board President Steve Tannehill said Oak Hills Elementary School and Pico Canyon Elementary School were built to accommodate the heavy population growth found west of Interstate 5. Even Wiley Canyon Elementary School got a makeover to hold more students. “But then you have to populate those schools and make enrollment decisions,” Tannehill said. “This is a step in a very long process that began 11 years ago when we opened Stevenson Ranch Elementary School.” Sue Doyle, (661) 257-5254 sue.doyle@dailynews.com 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Pupils with siblings at the school will have enrollment priority. Later this month, the board will decide how to divvy up the remaining seats. Remaining pupils will be diverted to Oak Hills Elementary, but could switch to Stevenson Ranch elementary when seats open up in the future. Kindergarten enrollment at Pico Canyon Elementary School has been limited to 140 students, and school officials said so far there doesn’t appear to be an overflow this year that would send kids to another school. Shapiro said the board’s decisions were necessary to keep enrollment at its schools at about 750. Almost 1,000 students now attend Stevenson Ranch elementary. Enrollment can be a challenge in Stevenson Ranch, where many young families have moved into its roomy houses and, as a result, have dominated the school district with student growth, while older communities are experiencing declines. STEVENSON RANCH – Hoping to balance a growing student population inside its classrooms, Newhall’s school board voted Tuesday to freeze enrollment in some grades and to limit large incoming kindergarten classes – again. It’s the fifth straight year for enrollment freezes in first through sixth grades at Stevenson Ranch and Pico Canyon elementary schools. And it’s the second year in a row that kindergarten classes at Stevenson Ranch will be capped. “It’s hard to do, but we have to,” said school board member Mike Shapiro. “There are so many kids coming out of the Stevenson Ranch community.” last_img read more

EMMET RUSHE’S FITNESS COLUMN: CELEBRITY HEALTH & FITNESS

first_imgSo Cheryl Cole has a new “celebrity” trainer. In case you didn’t know her name, it is Tracy Anderson. Her client list is impressive to say the least and with names like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham under her tutelage, she must know what she is doing, right?I mean, just look at her clients. They are thin. They are rich so they only use “the best”. They are famous, so they MUST know what they are talking about, because being famous means that your opinion counts as fact, doesn’t it?? To some in the media it does. The Daily Mail in the UK ran a story about how Cheryl got in shape and even had quotes from Tracy Anderson in it.Quotes like;“Instead of working the main leg muscles, I worked the tiny ones around Cheryl’s thighs. This pulls the big leg muscles in and makes her thighs look slimmer, she looked amazing in those tiny shorts.”Sounds great? This statement is nothing more than waffle. I’m not sure which tiny muscles she is referring to that ‘pulls the big leg muscles in’: the only thing that comes to my mind is a cramp.A cramp pulls my leg muscles in. Maybe when I’m having a cramp, my legs look amazing but I’m in too much pain to notice? Next time I have a cramp, I’m getting a pair of tiny shorts.Tracy also states that;‘Women should never lift more than three pound weights or they’ll get bulky’Woah, woah, woah, hold on there Missy! 3lbs will make you bulky? Ladies STEP AWAY FROM YOUR CHILDREN NOW! Put them down before you get bulky! Also, no more carrying shopping bags please. And that coat you wear has to weigh at least 3lbs? Be careful, or wearing it could give you quads like a shire pony. She doesn’t like running or traditional cardio either;‘While running and cycling may burn calories, they do not design feminine muscles or get rid of an imbalance that may masquerade as a “problem area.”What does a feminine muscle look like? It must have a snazzy dress sense or something?…imbalance that may masquerade as a “problem area.”?So the fat around your waist is actually a muscular imbalance? I wish I knew which muscle that is, because once I get it rebalanced I can solve the world’s obesity problems.Anyhow, it’s not just her training methodologies that leave a lot to be desired. The diet plan that features in her ‘30 Day Method’ is equally alarming.A presenter for the BBC’s Watchdog programme actually followed the programme and diet plan for the full 30 days. The results were as expected and the weight loss as promised. It was the blackouts and dizzy-spells with constant hunger and a sluggish digestive system that was an unexpected bonus. She had the diet plan checked by Catherine Collins, principal dietician at St George’s Hospital, London, and the results were shocking.Calories were around 700 per day which is far too low.It was low in iron which can lead to anaemia. It was lacking in absorbable calcium which can lead to osteoporosis and osteopenia too – something that Gwyneth Paltrow has been diagnosed with. (Coincidence?)Protein levels were low.Even the vitamins that are available cannot be absorbed since there is no fat present in the diet to act as an absorption vehicle, so they will just be excreted from the body. All this on top of Tracy’s recommended exercise regime of 2 hours per day 6 days per week for the rest of your life. The thing you need to realise is that celebrities are as fallible as the rest of us.They have the added pressure of constant media attention and criticism to deal with, so when they see someone promising instant results they will jump on it, just like any of us.Some of the worst diets ever invented came out of Hollywood.Just because they are doing it, doesn’t mean it’s right.#TrainSmartFor further information on how to work your smaller, feminine muscles, contact me through the link below.https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rushe-Personal-Training-and-Performance/120518884715118* Emmet is the owner and operator of Rushe Personal Training and PerformanceEMMET RUSHE’S FITNESS COLUMN: CELEBRITY HEALTH & FITNESS was last modified: July 14th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:celebrity trainerscolumnemmet rushefitnesslast_img read more

South African marks Disability Rights Awareness Month

first_img5 November 2015 Disability Rights Awareness Month (Dram) was launched at Optima College, which caters exclusively for blind and partially sighted people, in Pretoria on 3 November by Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini.Dram will run for a month, from 3 November to 3 December. It aims to increase awareness of the rights of people with disabilities as equal citizens in society in general. The month-long campaign also calls for speeding up equal access to socio-economic opportunities. This year, Dram is celebrating 60 years of the Freedom Charter under the theme: “South Africa – a free and just society inclusive of all persons with disabilities as equal citizens’.DSD Min addresses the media at the launch of National Disability Rights Awareness Month #DisabilityRightsSA pic.twitter.com/KoxOM2eE6U— SA Gov News (@SAgovnews) November 3, 2015Against all oddsCyclist Palesa Manaleng was in a cycling accident in 2014 in which she was paralysed from her waist down. But that hasn’t stopped her from continuing her passion for riding. She will be taking part in the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge in Joburg on 15 November, during Dram.Manaleng spent three months recovering in hospital from a dislocated spine, among other injuries. “I was lying on my bed at the Rehab Hospital and I was watching the Cycling Challenge and for the first time since my accident I was excited about something,” she recalled.“My problem, or so I thought, was that I could no longer walk and I knew at that moment lying in that bed that I wanted the feeling of freedom that those cyclists possessed.”She told her physiotherapist and occupational therapist she wanted to continue to cycle, but didn’t know how. “They showed me photos of Pieter du Preez on his hand-cycle and I knew then and there, I needed one,” she said.Watch more of Manaleng’s story here:After hearing about her story, the Cycle Challenge’s organisers decided to sponsor Manaleng with a hand-cycle, a cycling kit, training assistance and ongoing support.“Despite this remarkable life-changing event, Palesa remains strong and committed to making the most of her new life,” said race director Tanya Harford. “She doesn’t think of herself as a victim and has no sense that her life is now over or less than it was. She’s just making the best of adapting to new challenges.“She is the epitome of the event’s “Ride For A Purpose’ campaign.”Government’s white paperThe White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will be submitted to the cabinet this month for consideration, said Minister Dlamini.Once approved, it will commit authorities to advancing the rights of people with disabilities by accepting full responsibility and accountability for delivering services to all South Africans, including able-bodied and disabled men and women.“It will also strengthen recourse for persons with disabilities and their families if this does not happen,” the minister said.People with disabilities must be empowered to contribute to the development of their communities, schools, work places and to the country, she added. “Empowerment is identified as a core cross-cutting theme for enabling persons with disabilities to avail of and access all socio-economic development opportunities and rights that exist.”SouthAfrica.info reporterlast_img read more

E.A.R.T.H. Workshop teaching teachers

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Seneca Conservation District is happy to partner with Crawford and Marion Soil and Water Conservation District’s to host the 19th annual E.A.R.T.H. Workshop at New Riegel School on June 23 and 24. Any teacher, formal or informal, preschool to high school grade level, from anywhere in Ohio is welcome to attend.Featuring sessions, field trips, resources and classroom ready activities, our workshop’s theme will be the traditional fable of The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse. The conflicts, choices and conservation efforts of town and country people are nothing new and the speakers will give attending teachers plenty of background, lessons and alternative applications for helping students explore, understand and ultimately decide which mouse they relate to best. As students learn the Ohio’s Next Generation Science Standards, we also strive to equip them with real world applications and life skills that will make them responsible and respectable adult conservationists — much like the two mice in the fable. The workshop is divided into two days. Country Mouse Day — Tuesday, June 23 — will offer sessions from the Ohio Corn Marketing Association, Crawford SWCD, Geological Society of America, and Kelly Schott. Field Trips will explore new ethanol and energy curriculum and area farms (with an underground twist) to learn and understand soil health with farmers and geology tour guides. During Town Mouse Day — Wednesday, June 24 — session speakers will cover scientific inquiry with a live animal session from the Toledo Zoo,  the Sandusky River Valley Beekeeper’s Association,  a STEM session with Bob Horton and the Toledo water crisis from Harmful Algal Bloom. Field trips will take you to the town of Tiffin to visit the Franciscan Earth Literacy Center or the town of Fostoria to visit downtown to learn about the trains, museums & how to photograph it all.Complete session and field trip descriptions are available at www.conservesenecacounty.com. Registration brochure and form are also available there or by calling the office at (419)447-7073. Early bird registration is only $55, if received by May 29. Payment must be in the form of check or purchase order and should accompany the registration form in the mail. The Perfect Wall, Roof, and Slab — Building Science Podcast

first_imgRELATED MULTIMEDIA Video: Superinsulating a Home with Rigid FoamA Home Energy AuditGreen Builder Won’t Compromise on the Envelope GREEN PRODUCT GUIDE Insulation Blown Insulation Batt Insulation Board Insulation Foam InsulationThe most important factors are often not considered in design, construction, and regulation; and the unimportant ones tend to have an overly enthusiastic and detailed amount of specs associated with them. The Perfect Wall has all of the structure to the interior and all of the control functions to the exterior. Let’s start at the outside of the perfect wall with the cladding. Cladding provides three functions: 1. Aesthetics, 2. Protection from UV light 3. Physical, mechanical protection of the other control layers. Aesthetics matter because people don’t take care of ugly things. Ugliness is not sustainable. The longer something is around, the more resources it consumes, so the more resource efficient it is, and the fewer resources it uses over its lifetime. We want a beautiful building that lasts a long time and is ultra-efficient. Claddings should be completely open — we want air circulation behind the cladding system. The more air circulation, the better the system works. Sealants are purely aesthetic, they’re not functional. If the sealants fail, the primary air, thermal, vapor and rain control elements are not affected. If we take the perfect wall and lean it, we get the perfect roof. From the inside to the outside, the control layers are:StructureVapor control membraneInsulationCladdingSome of the old-timers will recognize this type of roof as an IRMA — Inverted Roof Membrane system. If you replace the ballast with dirt, grass, and a goat, you would get a green roof. (That was a joke.) Flip the roof and you get the perfect slab:Dirt and stonesInsulationVaporConcrete (structure)The physics of a foundation, wall and roof are the same (this is an Ah-Ha! moment). When we look at a section of the perfect roof, wall, and slab, and we get the other Ah-Ha! moment — the important parts are the corners. You have to connect the rain control element of the foundation to the rain control element of the walls, the air control element of the foundation to the air control element of the walls, the vapor control element of the foundation to the vapor control element of the walls, the thermal control element of the foundation to the thermal control element of the walls… Pretty fundamental stuff. Most failures occur where roofs connect to walls _Tip: Buy multi-colored pens_ Whenever we do design reviews in our office, we tell the youngsters to take a colored pen and trace the rain control layer around the building enclosure. If the pen has to leave the paper, they’ve identified a discontinuity that needs to be addressed. Use a different colored pen for each of the control layers. Whenever the pen leaves the paper, you’ve identified a flaw. It’s as simple as that. We find that the flaws are concentrated at the connecting elements. Windows complicate the perfect wall Now these are pretty easy, but it gets complicated. In the real world, someone pokes a hole in the building and we call that a window. Windows have to do everything that a wall does, and more. It has to control water, air, heat, and vapor; you want to be able to see through it, and every so often someone is going to want to open it too. Windows can actually do all of that stuff, which is pretty amazing. No wonder they’re so expensive. All we have to do is connect the rain control element of the window to the rain control element of the wall, the air control element of the window to the air control element of the wall, the vapor control element of the window to the vapor control element of the wall, the thermal control element of the window to the thermal control element of the wall. The reason we’ve been having so much trouble with window-to-wall connections is because we’ve been relying on one person to do all of this: His name is “By-Others.” Mr. By-Others shows up on all of these specs and you have to make sure he is not going to be responsible for all of these connections. Someone has to be responsible. The window industry doesn’t do us any favors either — they don’t tell us in their window system which part of these windows systems are responsible for controlling water, air, vapor and heat. In the absence of guidance, we have to assume that the innermost component of the window is where all four of those functions collapse. So we wrap the window openings and make the connection at the back — so that if the window should fail, the water will go to the outside. That’s how you design a building: water continuity, air continuity, vapor continuity, thermal continuity. It can’t be that simple, right? Well, the answer is, “Yes it is.” Podcasts: Podcast:Air Barriers vs. Vapor BarriersHow Heat Moves Through HomesEfflorescence = Water Damage Insulation Retrofits on Old Masonry BuildingsHow Air Affects a House RELATED ARTICLES Insulation Overview Insulating Roofs, Walls, and Floors Installing Fiberglass Right” Insulation Choices Can Foam Insulation Be Too Thick? In order of importance, they are: 1. Rain control 2. Air control 3. Vapor control 4. Thermal control Thermal control is the easiest to specify, calculate, and measure, so that’s what codes focus on. Codes typically ignore the most important layers because they’re the most difficult to specify. The vapor control layer is easier to specify than the air control layer, so codes obsess over specifying the vapor control layer and ignoring the air control layer. Video:last_img read more

Animated Titles with Text Presets in After Effects

first_imgPremiere Pro video editors should take advantage of the great titling and lower-thirds tools in After Effects.
